working to give every baby in the UK the healthiest start in life

Driving change

Nine out of ten women in the UK who stop breastfeeding before their baby is six weeks old would have liked to breastfeed for longer.

Every year more than 300,000 women across the UK are not receiving the support or information they need.

Best Beginnings lobbies government to create a society in which breastfeeding becomes the standard – not the exception.

We founded the Breastfeeding Coalition in 2006 and now work with 40 organisations, including five Royal Colleges, UNICEF and all the national breastfeeding charities.

Guiding principles of the Breastfeeding Manifesto
  • Women feel enabled to initiate and continue breastfeeding for as long as they wish.

  • Parents are supported to make informed choices about feeding their babies.

  • Everyone is aware of the significant benefits associated with breastfeeding.
